Industry Initiatives
There is no higher priority to CLIA member lines than the safety and security of passengers and crew. In coordination with the the International Maritime Organization, U.S. Coast Guard, and flag and port states, we've undertaken several initiatives to enhance the numerous regulations and codes to which we adhere. The industry has a special relationship with the U.S. Coast Guard through their Cruise Ship Center of Expertise. They have “the responsibility for ensuring that these ships meet all international conventions and domestic requirements for safety, security and environmental protection.”
Our security committee, made up of security officers from each cruise line, meet every 60 days with law enforcement and intelligence agencies to discuss relevant issues such as port and ship security and intelligence assessments.
Although serious crime aboard cruise ships is rare, we have worked particularly closely with authorities to ensure we have properly trained security personnel who know how to respond appropriately to any allegations of crime. We instituted a zero tolerance policy when it comes to crime, and in addition to our mandatory reporting requirements, we also have an agreement with the FBI and U.S. Coast Guard to report all alleged crimes involving U.S. citizens anywhere while at sea regardless of ship registration. Lastly, we worked with the FBI to provide our security personnel with a comprehensive crime scene preservation training DVD, developed specifically for the cruise industry.
